When running a small business, preparation is key. Especially when it comes to being on top of all of the important accounting deadlines that will affect your company. This includes deadlines for your self-assessment and VAT return. To make it easier for you, we’ve put together a handy list of the important accounting dates in January that you need to know about. Don’t forget to pencil these into your calendar as a reminder!

Tuesday 1st January 2019

This is the Corporation tax payment deadline for all companies with a Year End 31st March 2018.

Monday 7th January 2019

This is the deadline for VAT registered businesses with a VAT quarter ending November 2018 to arrange submission and payment of their VAT return to HMRC.

Saturday 12th January 2019

If you pay your VAT liability by Direct Debit, this is the date HMRC will collected any liability payable for the quarter ended 30th November 2018 from your nominated bank account.

Saturday 19th January 2019

This is the deadline for postal remittance of PAYE, NICs and CIS liabilities to HMRC.

If you are registered as a CIS Contractor you must arrange submission of your monthly CIS return for the month ending 5th January 2019 by this date.

Tuesday 22nd January 2019

This is the deadline for electronic remittance of PAYE, NICs and CIS liabilities to HMRC.

Thursday 31st January 2019 at midnight

This is the deadline for paying any tax you owe from the tax year ended 5th April 2018 (also known as a balancing payment) and the first payment on account towards your 5th April 2019 liability. The deadline for the second payment on account is the 31st July.

Note this is also the deadline for submission of your Self-Assessment tax return to HMRC. Penalties and interest apply if HMRC do not receive your return and payment of any liabilities due by this date.

If your company year end is 30th April, you must arrange submission of your accounts for the year ended 30th April 2018 to Companies House by this date too! Penalties apply is your accounts have not been submitted on time.
